What Do Students Actually Need From a Laptop?
Before browsing by spec, it's worth being clear about what actually matters for student use — because overspending on specs you won't use is as much a mistake as underspending on a machine that can't keep up.
Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 or Intel Core i5 handles everything a student needs — coursework, research, online learning platforms, video calls, presentations, and streaming — without any meaningful limitation. Intel Core Ultra 5 configurations are also available for students who want a more future-ready platform. You don't need an i7 for standard academic workloads — our Intel Core i5 vs i7 guide covers this distinction if you're still deciding.
RAM: 8GB is sufficient for students whose workload is primarily one or two applications at a time — documents, browser, video calls. If you regularly keep many browser tabs open alongside other applications, or your course uses more demanding software, 16GB is the more comfortable choice. Several 16GB laptop configurations are available in this range.
Storage: 256GB is the entry point and works for students who store documents in OneDrive or Google Drive and keep minimal local files. 512GB gives more breathing room for coursework files, downloaded content, and software without actively managing storage.
Battery life: A full day of lectures without hunting for a power socket matters more than an extra gigabyte of RAM. Look for models rated above 10 hours — real-world battery life is typically 70 to 80 percent of the manufacturer's figure.
Screen size: 15.6-inch is the most common size in this range — a practical balance between working space and portability. 16-inch models give a larger display and suit students who do more desk-based work. If you need something lighter for daily commuting, our 14-inch laptops are worth comparing alongside this range.

Student Laptops by Level
Entry-Level Student Laptops
The most accessible configurations in this range. AMD Ryzen 5 or Intel Core i5 processors with 8GB RAM and 256GB or 512GB SSD. HP 255, HP 255R, and ASUS VivoBook 15 configurations sit here — all capable of handling standard student workloads comfortably. The right choice for students on a strict budget whose workload is primarily documents, browsing, and video calls. Our laptops under £500 range is worth browsing alongside this tier.
Mid-Range Student Laptops
The strongest value bracket for students. Intel Core Ultra 5 configurations appear here alongside AMD Ryzen 5 options, with 512GB SSD becoming more consistent. Lenovo V15 and HP 250R G9 models offer dependable everyday performance at this level. Students who want a machine that will remain comfortable through a full three or four year degree without feeling slow are best served in this bracket.
Higher-Spec Student Laptops
16GB RAM configurations become available at this level — including the Lenovo IdeaPad 1 with AMD Ryzen 5 and 512GB SSD, and the HP 15 with 16GB and 512GB. For students on design, engineering, architecture, or computer science courses whose software is more demanding, the step up to 16GB is worth considering here. Selected Lenovo ThinkPad E16 configurations also appear in this range — a business-grade machine with Windows 11 Pro that suits students who need professional-standard hardware or plan to use the laptop for work after graduating. Browse our business laptops list if you want to compare ThinkPad E16 against other professional-grade options.
Student Laptops by Brand
HP Student Laptops
HP is the most widely stocked brand in this category and for good reason — the HP 250, HP 255, and HP 255R series offer reliable everyday performance at consistently competitive prices. Both Windows 11 Home and Pro configurations are available on selected models, giving students the flexibility to choose the right OS edition for their situation. HP's build quality at this level is dependable and the range covers more configurations than any other brand in the student category. Browse all HP laptops.
Lenovo Student Laptops
Lenovo's IdeaPad 1 and V15 G4 cover the everyday student tier with AMD Ryzen 5 processors — both are practical, well-built machines that deliver Lenovo's keyboard quality at accessible prices. For students who want a step up, selected Lenovo ThinkPad E16 configurations offer business-grade specification at a level that sits within student budget range — a strong choice for students who will still be using this laptop in a professional environment after graduation. Browse all Lenovo laptops.
ASUS Student Laptops
ASUS VivoBook 15 and VivoBook 16 cover students who want a slightly larger display without stepping up in price. Intel Core i3 and i5 configurations are available — practical choices for standard academic workloads. Browse all ASUS laptops.
Is 8GB or 16GB RAM Better for a Student Laptop?
This is the most common question in the student laptop category and worth addressing directly.
For most students — coursework, research, online learning, documents, video calls, and streaming — 8GB handles daily use without issue. Where 8GB starts to show its limits is sustained heavy multitasking: many browser tabs open simultaneously alongside other applications, or more demanding software used in certain degree courses.
16GB gives more comfortable headroom and extends the useful life of the laptop over a three or four year degree as software demands grow. If you're deciding between an 8GB and 16GB configuration of the same or similar model, 16GB is the better long-term investment where budget allows. If budget is the primary constraint and your workload is genuinely light, 8GB is a practical choice that won't hold you back for standard academic use.

Windows 11 Home or Pro for Students?
Most student laptops come with Windows 11 Home, which covers everything a student needs — learning platforms, Microsoft 365, Teams or Zoom, streaming, and all standard software. There's no practical limitation for personal student use.
Windows 11 Pro appears on selected models in this range — including selected HP 255R and Lenovo ThinkPad E16 configurations. Pro is worth considering if your university IT system requires domain join, if you're on a computer science or IT course where Pro features are relevant, or if you plan to use the laptop for work in a managed business environment after graduating.
